Latest Adobe Flash update hangs - Please close getPlusPlus

Early this morning, Firefox updated itself to its latest version. Then it recommended me to update Adobe's flash player, so I did.

The update is run by a utility called 'getPlusPlus', which at some point spawned another updater, who complained that 'getPlusPlus' is still running and 'Please exit this program'.

So, what needs to be done is to go in XP's task manager and kill the process. I am not sure my mother could handle this - she would probably just leave firefox and move back to IE.

This is the meaning of Scheiss Sommer

Scheiss Sommer is Shitty summer.

Check out the weather forecast for today and you can see why they call it
Scheiss Sommer.

I had to wear my PVC rain coat and pants in order to get to work dry.

Cycling to work

I am riding a bicycle to work since August 2003.

Over the years i can say it saved me a lot of money. I had to live close to where i worked, and in Givatayim it meant that it cost me more on the rent, but i saved valuable time standing in traffic and could spend the time with my family.

There is a guy who works with me who lives in a village 20 km from here.
He ride a modified bicycle to work. It is an electric bicycle kit he bought and assembled.
This is how much it cost him:
Old bicycle (he already had it) - 0 Euros.
Electric bicycle kit in eBay.com- 200 Euros.
Battery - 1000 Euros (in retrospective, he could have bought one for 500)

total 1200 Euros. Max speed 48 Km/h.

You could also buy a new Electric bicycle for 700- 2500 Euros.

He is riding them to work for two years, saving lots of money.

Playground regulations

Everything here is regulated.

Here is an example: there is a law that regulates playgrounds.

You can't just walk into a playground and do what you want. You must read and comply.

While this might seem awkward, it does make sense. If you compare it with Israel, then there you can only see requests like "please keep it quiet during 14:00 and 16:00". In Bayern, on the other hand, the playground is *closed* during that time.

Zone alarm's firewall - continued

Another thing that improved after removing zone alarm's firewall is the integrity of downloaded files.

After uninstalling it, i noticed that suddenly i don't have corrupted files.

Oh, and now my windows can run for more than 24 hours straight.

What caused my Windows Vista to be very slow?

Yesterday I found out. It was Zone alarm's firewall.

If you installed it and your system suffers from the following symptoms, I recommend that you uninstall it.

1. Slow start up - doubles the start up time
2. Very slow shutdown - about 5 times slower than the usual Vista shutdown (which is slower than XP, but that is another story)
3. Slow performance - after running for more than a few minutes, the system would operate at 70% cpu usage or higher, everything was performing very bad. An example would be yourtube - clips would only play seamlessly after a fresh system reset. Trying to watch something in youtube after more than 2 hours without reset was impossible.
4. System responsiveness - or maybe lack of it

It was difficult to track it down to Zone alarm's firewall, because when checking the task manager, it was always a process other than Zone alarm's: Firefox, Java, IE…

If in doubt, uninstall it and .

Living in a small town

Only in small towns or villages, you can come to work and find a parked Segway in the bicycle parking lot.

The picture was taken with my mobile phone, hence the poor quality.

Bayern - every reason is good enough to party

Here in Bayern (Bavaria), every reason is good enough to party:
- Celebrate xx number of years an organization exists
- Let people get to know your organization once a year
- Religious holidays
- A fair is coming to town
- Get people to see your farm
- Bock beer season opening. This is called the 5th season in Bayern.
- Get people to see the old parts of a town/village
- Play poker
- Hear classical music

The list goes on and on

what can you expect in these festivals?
Great local music.
Traditional clothes
Beer, usually they only have it in Maß - one liter of great beer. If you order 0.5 liter, they would just fill half of it.

Here are a few pictures I took that show only the upcoming festivals for the next 2 weeks.

what is Kurzarbeit?

living in Bayern

Living in Bavaria is different than living in Israel and even in other parts of Germany.

I am not going to say that 5 months here is a long enough study, but here are a couple interesting things:

1. Beer is taxed as food, and not as alcoholic drinks. Oh, and its very good and very cheap.
2. In the summer, every week there is some kind of festival even in small villages.

Combine 1+2 and you get lots of opportunities to have fun in Bayern (Bavaria).

Party belts

Party belts are very common in Germany.
They are sold for 4-8 Euros and have small pockets with bottles with different drinks in them.

Here is a guy with two belts, taking the underground train in Nuremberg on June the 20th at around 10 o'clock in the morning. He was traveling with 3 friends.

Rhapsody's idea of Dialog boxes

This is another symptom of Rhapsody's bad IDE design. Their dialog boxes are packed with information, which often causes users to just click on OK without reading what they say.

IE8 has a meaningless progress bar

Why add a progress bar animation if does not show any progress in the installation process?

This progress bar just goes from side to side until the installation ends.

If you don't have any info on how the installation progresses and you still want some animation, go ahead and use the silly files copy animation, or create something new.

Why start at the Ground floor or with a first floor when you can start with a 2nd floor?
This makes your building look more impressive with 5 floors, instead of 3.

The pirate party - Germany

Germany is on a course towards becoming a police state. The politicians and a few corporations want to control, filter and collect Internet traffic as a start.

There is a law being proposed to censor the web - as a start, blocking child pornography. The movie and music industry are lining up next.

There is, however one Party who is going to fight for the civil rights in Germany: The Pirate Party

Here's a translated to English version

They have their own wiki and an anonymous browsing service that you can use for free.

here is a good reason to master the language you sing in

take me tonight is the name of the song that was written to the first DSDS (Deutschland sucht den Superstar) - Germany's version of American idol.

The composer / lyrics writer is Dieter Bohlen, who was the guy who was the keyboard/guitar player in Modern Talking & wrote most if not all of the material of the band.

During one live TV show of DSDS, one of the other judges (dieter was also a judge in the show), told him that it means other than what he thinks, but he dismissed her with 'I don't mind'.

This reminded me of the all time classic 'i wanna fuck you in the ass' dutch commercial.

And the brilliant 'we are sinking'.

Microsoft's naming convention quiz

Earlier today I wanted to uninstall IE8. I opened the add/remove software application, and then started looking for IE8.

Where would you look? under 'I', 'M' or 'W' ?

Vista is slow

I don't know why I am still working with vista.

Maybe its new promising memory management. It was supposed to be great.

The bottom line: it is very slow. very.
Even after turning off all the things that might be the blame for being so slow: anti - virus, firewall, defender...and of course UAC. It is still much slower than the machine I have at work (which is at least two years older than the one i have at home).

Maybe it is DX10. I haven't tried it yet, but with the overall performance of the system, I don't expect much.

Needless to say all the fancy graphics is the first thing i turn off after installing windows: I am setting it to the classic scheme. Funny, I never had to turn off graphic options on KDE.

Kirwa celebrations in Amberg.

The Kirwa celebrations in Amberg are taking place in Ammersricht, 24-27/04/2009.

I went yesterday. There was good music, great atmosphere and superb beer.
The Bavarians know how to party. There is always an occasion and an excuse :-)

They wear traditional clothes and hats, and after they drink a Mass (German - Maß), which means 1 Liter beer, they become very happy.

Rhapsody's menu clutter

I am currently struggling with Telelogic's Rhapsody (recently bought by IBM).

I find the menus overloaded with choices and options. I am sure there is a simpler way.

Please let me have less than 10 choices in each menu. OK, no more than 15.

beer

Thats it. i can safely say i found my favorate beers.

Its not like i tested all the beers here in Bayern, this lifelong task is far from done.

I did however find 2 beers that i really like:

Franziskaner Hefe-Weissbier Hell (Naturtrüb). This is my favorate.
Erdinger Hefe-Weissbier Hell (Naturtrüb).

And sometimes when i need a change, or when there are no Weissbier glass around, i drink this one:
Falkenfelser Weissbier Hell

Why ask why?

How do software engineers tell if they are hungry?

Did you ever wonder how software engineers tell if they are hungry?

They simply look at their watch. If its the usual time they go to eat(my buddies eat at 12:30), then they would say "I am hungry", but if its only a few minutes earlier, they would say "nah, its too early, i am not hungry yet"

BTW, in Germany they say Mahlzeit instead of hello if its somehow related to eating, so if you meet someone and she is on her way to eat something she would greet you with "Mahlzeit".

Even if the context is not meal-related, and the time is between 09:30 to 10:30(breakfast) or 11:30 to 13:00(lunch), people will usually greet you with Mahlzeit.

A common translation could be "Enjoy your meal".

Germany

So, three weeks ago i moved to Germany to a small town close to Nürnberg.

Its a very nice city with lots of old buildings, churches and castles.

I enjoy just walking about and looking at the buildings.

I work in a complete open space environment called Grossraum in German. I can't imagine working in such an environment in Israel. Here it is very quite, you could hear maybe one mobile phone ring during the day. The people are talking quietly. In Israel it was very difficult to work even with one more person in the same room: people talk aloud and their mobile phones are set to ring (not just vibe like they set them here) and they use the speaker phone function often.

The beer here is excellent. There are many brands to choose for. Oh, and since i live in Bayern, i am allowed to drink one beer during my lunch break...which i never will, but nevertheless its a nice thing to have.

My favorite type of beer is the Hefe Weizen, which is made of wheat and there are brewers yeast at the bottom. you must drink it from a glass, so that you could enjoy the yeast. Pour 80% of the bottle gently to your glass(so that it wont foam too much), and them stir the rest vigorously, then pour it to the glass. Enjoy.
